The minimum weight requirement for hallmarking precious metal articles in the UK depends on the type of metal.
For gold, the minimum weight is 1 gram.
For silver, the minimum weight is 7.78 grams.
For platinum, the minimum weight is 0.5 grams.
After testing, an assay office applies the hallmark, which contains information about the metal's purity and origin. The hallmark must include the sponsor's mark, a fineness mark, an assay office mark, and an optional date letter.
